Does anyone else want to cry that its May already? How is winter nearly here and we’re still in the throws of this poxy pandemic. Sigh. If you’re going to do winter right then there’s nowhere else to be other than down south. Down South in winter is where it’s at. Pack your ugg boots and puffy jacket and prepare for contrasting days of rain, wind, cosiness, red wine and all the Margaret River food. Coming from the land of cold and rain, where winter shows up even in Summer (yea nice one Ireland) some would say I’m an expert (eh hem).
Staying close by
Now obviously where to stay is of great importance…we do know a place ;). In all seriousness, we built Bina Maya as a year round retreat. This Irish Aussie hates being cold so we have mitigated the cold (inside) where possible. Reverse cycle aircon is all rooms. Underfloor bathroom heating (timed beautifully all day and night). Specialty windows to keep the space warmer. And of course our stunning indoor wood fires. Get your robe on laze around. Indulge in our in house streaming services (all complimentary of course) whilst you take it in turns stoking the fire. Feeling like some fresh air? There are some wonderful bush walks around the property. And if that’s too ambitious, light your outdoor fire pit and get out the red wine and marshmallows.
Getting out and about
If winter down south is all about embracing your inner sloth; we have you covered. If you’re more of the explorer type then spoilt for choice is an understatement! For some stunning hiking trails its hard to go past the cape to cape walk. It has sections that suit a myriad of fitness levels (and prams/wheelchair users). We also love the walk around Big Rock Reserve and the trail along Castlerock. The trail from Dunsborough to Meelup is stunning. Some of our best beaches are along this beautiful track. You may even spot some whales along Point Piquet. If you’re really game, finish off with brunch at Meelup farmhouse. Bloody Mary anyone? You so deserve it.
If you’re more of a lets go to all the wineries type, a great place to start is the small cosy boutique cellar doors. Marri wood park close to Bina Maya are a family run biodynamic winery with a delightful chenin, cabernet and pet nat. Get organised and book your tasting ahead to enjoy one of their complimentary cheese boards (which you can enjoy by the fire).
Windance, ah Windance, we love love their Cabernets (and so does James Halliday). A fantastic family run winery with a warm welcoming cellar door. Kids playroom, outdoor seating and a selection of deli food to enjoy there or take away home.
A little further down the road is the wonderful Domain Naturaliste. Man oh man does Bruce Dukes know how to make a fabulous chardonnay and cabernet. Book ahead to indulge in a guided wine flight with beautiful views of the vineyard and a delightful charcuterie board.
Long Winter’s Lunch
Lastly, there’s always a long long lunch. And there’s nothing like a down south Winter’s lunch, when its cold and rainy. It’s got to be Wills Domain. We’ve been known to take 5 hours to savour every mouthful of one of Seth’s degustations. The snacks are always my favourite and with the fire going and gas heaters its always a cosy affair. The views of the vineyard are the very best in the region and the knowledgeable and friendly staff will always ensure you have a wonderful experience.
