Christmas in the Margaret River Region

Can you believe that Christmas is almost upon us already? What a year it has been. I can’t think of a better place to spend the silly season than in the Margaret River Region. From stunning beaches to some of the best local produce, your Christmas holidays will be nothing short of fabulous.

For me, Christmas is all about the food (but isn’t everyday?). Anyone who knows me knows I call Bunbury Farmers Markets the mothership. It’s alright for you Perthians, you literally have to pass it on your Margaret River holiday way. But for us locals it’s a bit of a trek. A trek that delivers all the Christmas food joy. From succulent hams, to melt in your mouth rib eye roasts, sides of cured salmon, to the most delectable cherries and not to mention, cheese paradise. Gimme it all. The local and seasonal fresh fruit and veggies will mean your Christmas salads will be far from ordinary.

For seafood, we are so very lucky to have the amazing Ocean Fresh Seafood in Dunsborough where you can get restaurant quality Western Australian fish. If prawns, oysters and crayfish are on your menu, be sure to get your orders in on time. You could even treat yourself to some Beluga caviar. Go on, you deserve it.  And you’ll need to get some crusty bread to go with that…and around the corner from Bina Maya you’ll find Yallingup Woodfired Bread where you die and go to sourdough heaven.

So that’s the food sorted. What about the booze? Its got to be French bubbles for breakfast, it is Christmas after all and paired with some Merchant and Maker croissants? Even better. Aperol Spritz is always on the menu in our house in summer time. It’s a fabulous start to the Christmas lunch feast. To drink with lunch? Above all, for me it has to be Chardy and being in Chardonnay land there’s a lot to choose from. Our local favourites? Flametree SRS, Domain Naturaliste Artus, and Swings & Roundabouts Backyard Stories.

Most importantly, there has to be a beach visit, which we normally do first thing. If you feel like a battle then Meelup is for you. For me? Eagle bay beach on a still morning doesn’t get any better but Quindalup’s beauty and calm bay often gets overlooked.

Lastly, if food prep is all to much for you on your Margaret River holiday, we’re very excited to see that our friends at Swings and Roundabouts are putting on a feast on Christmas day. Freshly shucked oysters and Porchetta are just some of the items on the menu, which, as my Auntie Joanie would say, sounds very salubrious. Or from our very good mates at Tiller Dining a stunning Christmas Feast can be picked up or delivered to your accommodation (by Christmas Eve) so all the work is done for you!

After all that Christmas eating you’ll need some quality relaxing time for naps, sleep ins and more….we know a place.
